Not always pretty or pleasant, but easy to read. Not a fan of Beauty Pageants, but the motivation behind them is pretty straightforward. Yet, at the same time, other people can make art inspired by that awful reality to tell a new and better message for a new audience, a new generation. And it manifests itself throughout our culture, not just drag.Īrt is an infinite canvas for the human mind to project itself upon, and from this repression we get many forms of hyper sexualized media that aren’t at all healthy depictions. This leads to repressions that can manifest in unhealthy ways. There’s a deeper issue at play in my opinion- and that’s discussing sexuality in an open honest and healthy manner is very difficult for most given how stigmatized it is. There are cultural elements of drag that are highly sexual, but that’s not all of drag. But no form of expression is truly bound to its origin, creativity is ever expanding and art is limitless. In a sense you could say there’s a core to the genre that is sexual in nature, and you wouldn’t necessarily be wrong. Take rock n roll music- the name itself was a euphemism for getting laid. I view drag as any other form of art/expression. But that's what many would seem to argue these days. It's natural to be curious, and you can still say it's usually only girls that wear makeup, but it's okay to wear it if you're not. I'd wager it's far healthier for development to allow a kid to exhibit gender non conforming behaviors, say a young boy getting into and playing with his mom's makeup, and rather than shame them for it maybe show the kid how you use make up. Gender identity begins forming very early in life, from the moment a child recognizes the difference between mama and papa. But let your son explore gender without pushing it on them, suddenly many become furious. Some parents let their kid's play violent games or watch R rated movies, and no one throws much fuss. This just ingrains that same rigidity in kids, and while that is your choice as a parent, it doesn't make it wrong for another parent to be more lax about the importance or rigidity of those roles. Questioning it and exploring it are healthy aspects of developement, but some people get very rigid in their view that "you can't play with that, it's a girl's toy" or "you can't wear that." etc. At the end of the day, gender is an amorphous and constantly shifting construct. But the key factor isn't the kid wanting to dress up, it's the parent allowing and very possibly pushing the child to perform for attention, which is the same problem I have with child beauty pageants. Now, when it comes to children performing for an audience in full drag, makeup and all, that is unacceptable to me. I cross dressed as a gag a few times in high school, and it was in no way seen as sexual by anybody. Most kids have put balloons in their shirt to pretend they have boobs, and it's not sexual in the least. Most events I'm aware of are literally just reading stories with a message of promoting self exploration in terms of expression. I'll preface by saying, there are inevitably going to be drag events that cross boundaries that shouldn't be, but gender bent costumes aren't inherently adult activities. Others have already done that, and you can take their lists for what they are worth. For that reason, we will not define a list of "members" on this sub. A space for people willing to have civil conversations, in good faith, about polarizing or controversial issues. If we have anything in common is we have a willingness to have a civil conversation about polarizing and important topics. So the IDW does not name a unified group, much less a tribe in any normal sense. In his recent AMA, Sam Harris put it well: If we have anything in common is we have a willingness to have civil conversations.Ī lot of people have been asking this question or asking for a list of "members" of the IDW. It's a collection of people willing to open rational dialogue spanning a variety of issues from politics to philosophy. The term Intellectual Dark Web refers to the growing community of those interested in space for free dialogue held in good faith. Our sub is optimized for the new reddit and you can see our updated rules. If you're able to see this message that means you're using the old reddit format.
